Raquette River Wetlands is one of the largest contiguous wetland complex in the Adirondacks (see map below left). It's 48,000 plus acres of river and marsh habitat, home of  Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Otters, Beaver and Muskrats. There are many rare and exotic plants and there is wonderful fishing for Walleyes, Perch, Bass and Pike.  Tupper Lake has some of the largest walleyes in the State of NY.  Through the Raquette River corridor  you can access hundreds of square miles of state forest land that is open to the public for hiking, hunting, bird watching and many other forms of recreation.

Directions: At Axton Landing (see map below) the main routes divide. To go to the Saranac, Paul Smiths, etc., you canoe from Axton Landing to the northwest corner of Stony Creek Ponds and carry about ¾ mile to Upper Saranac Lake; but to go to Tupper Lake, follow the Raquette River 18 miles to the foot of Tupper Lake, where you may proceed to Tupper Lake village Or, you may canoe to the head of Tupper Lake, a distance of six miles. There is a public boat launching site at the Hamlet of Moody on the southeastern shore of Tupper Lake.   As the crow files, it is about three miles from Axton Landing to the Trombley Landing lean-to, but by the winding river eight miles are covered. A mile beyond this lean-to, a cut-off on the left of about 400 feet saves a mile paddle around the north loop where the river comes close to the state highway. By following the left-hand shore (south shore), keeping sharp left, you will stay in the proper channel. From the Oxbow, the route is southwest until Simon Pond where the river bends sharply to the north, a cut-off heading towards Mt. Morris leads to the southwest. Take this to Simon Pond and head west towards the highway bridge. From this point the channel is marked to the outlet of Tupper Lake and north to Raquette Pond and the dock at Tupper Lake Village. Lean-tos are located at Black Bay and Sorting Gap.
