| Do you wonder what that long pole
is doing in front of this old hotel. It's called a well sweep, a levered
pole with a water bucket tied to a long rope to narrow end of it. It
was levered so even the lady of the house used little effort to draw water
from the well. Just pull down on the rope until your bucket was filled and
then let go of the rope and the heavy end of the pole would lift the
bucket back to your waiting hands. |
